to track the rain in a minute. as we've been mentioning, it is a cold storm system. los gatos with a high of 89 degrees. then this morning we had 58. numbers dropping down into the 40s. a daytime high will be colder than that morning low we experienced. as far as the rainfall goes right now. we're tracking more moderate to pockets of heavy rainfall down into parts of the south bay. you can see down in south san jose, a little heavier downpoor on your way for coopertino. and then morgan hill and gilroy, you're about to get slammed with heavier rainfall. the 101 commute probably not a good idea to leave over the next half hour. it's going to be coming down and quick. we'll take you outside right now. the time lapse from the emeriville camera. you can see the cloud tops up at about 20,000 feet. that's a decent amount of uplift that may bring us the thunderstorms. what you're going to note here, as the low pressure moves over the next 24 hours, thunderstorms will be possible, even potentially some hail. we'll track it hour by hour for you coming up throughout the show. >> an unlikely location

valley. kira klapper is in los gatos. >>> we begin with meteorologist mike nicco, welcome back. >>> healthy clip, moderate to heavy rain around sometimes even yellows and oranges causing a lot of ponding on the roads. i was slipping and sliding almost like driving on ice at times, there was so much water on the roads so much hydroplaneing. rainfall amounts of a quarter to 3/10 of an inch per hour covers the entire bay area. -- you can see yellows through the north bay, through the heart of the bay into the east bay valleys. that heaviest of the rain has calmed didn't a little but set the stage for the problems this morning with all that wet weather. more developing along the cold front starting to push into the north bay. because it is pushing into the north bay that means fastest winds and heaviest rain from now through the morning rush hour. it will start to taper as we head into the afternoon. waves of rain and showers did the afternoon hours and temperatures very mild, upper 50s to mid 60s. >>> very dangerous out there this morning. high winds, heavy rain at times, i came i

it is making its debut in the los gatos holiday parade even if it pours. >> we'll be prepared with plastic. >> reporter: organizers stay holiday parade has only been ranld out once in 56 years. they have no intention of canceling it. still, some participants are a little storm shy. >> we've had five cancellations at this point and we have 246 entries. we'll probably have another five to ten if it is like this. >> reporter: the annual tree lighting ceremony schedule for downtown los gatos tomorrow night will not go dark either because of the storm. and the open holiday parade which is drawn crowds of 100,000 peel in the past will keep on marching saturday afternoon. so grab your umbrella, bundle up and you'll have plenty to see this weekend. as we saw here at christmas in the park in downtown san jose, you'll likely be rewarded with short lines and plenty of elbow room. i asked the parade chairman if he really thought that they would see the crowds out here on saturday for the parade. even though it will be raining very strongly. and he said, look, there are hundreds of kids in this parade

that the school, the high school in los gatos, led by a very strong, great principled people, brought in an organization to help and after all i should preface in 2009 was a brutal year for los gatos high school, they lost two other students shortly before jill died. the school and principal brought in a counseling group called cassie, counseling and support services for youth, embedded counseling. and their job was to change the culture, very much what we've heard today, change the culture to get rid of the stigma of mental health and understanding that a lot of these kids feel anxiety and stress, they need someone to talk to. they just don't have the perspective that an adult has. >> one of the things that struck me was the boys were interviewed, they knew they were in trouble, but i didn't hear them say i'm sorry, i shouldn't have sent the picture on. >> the three boys were arrested and they complied with a vuft stis program and part of that program was to write a letter to jill apologizing. as one could expect there is a spectrum of responses. some were very, very sincere. s

to bring in nonon onworkers to fill those shifts. reporting live in los gatos, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. >> thanks, marianne. >>> switching to the forecast now, the slow moving halloween storm brought with it some impressive rainfall totals. we have more changes on the way. jeff ranieri is in the nbc bay area weather center with more. >> it was moving at about 15 to 20 miles an hour. you could have rode a bike from the north bay to the south bay quicker than this storm system. let's get a look at the radar now. you can see the storm is pushing off to the south and east. and right now, no raindrops on the doppler radar as it scans around. how about that rain. one of the highest totals in san francisco with 1 3/10. we still picked up 16/100. this puts san francisco well above average this time of year. that is a huge contrast from what we had last year. here we go again with the extreme weather. that storm moves out. here comes high pressure. this will produce some 70s and 80s in the seven-day forecast. and potentially record setting heat. we'll detail all of this for you coming up.
